The Electorate and The Expectation
Velacherry…Chennai…Not
very far ago…It was a very pleasant morning…I was savouring the morning
delicacy in my favourite mug and surfing
the news channel when the door bell ranged…I got up and opened the door…my maid
was there, she entered, closed the door and got engaged with the daily chores. She
had not come a day before due to voting so I asked her, “whom did you vote
Rohini?” “Flower”, she responded.
Flower??? Before I could realize what she meant suddenly she started yelling pointing
towards TV “Flower” “Flower” I looked up and what I saw was clippings of
Narendra Modi’s speech being aired and then I realized Oh! So she meant Lotus the symbol of BJP. A thought then cropped up in my mind that there was Modi wave no
doubt and even the southernmost corner of the country had not remained undrenched
with the lashes.
The wave is definitely blowing with full force heading
straight towards the 7 Race course Road.
Moreover, the various exit polls are supposed to be boosting up and only giving a fillip to the ambitions
of BJP and as the D-Day is approaching fast the reverberation of slogans like “Abki
Baar, Modi Sarkar” is only escalating not only in the lanes of Varanasi and
Vadodara but also capturing the essence of air across the nation. The mood is
all set to welcome a grand change in the Indian political scenario. TV channels
are abuzz with their speculations and panel discussions serving enough material
to keep their audience glued on to the TV sets, editorials and stories are
fighting to get space in journals and news papers and the public amidst all the
chaos is waiting with abated breath for the breaking news which they think is
going to bring a new sunrise erasing all the darkness. The hope of change is
clinging with this much awaited sea change in politics but the big question is…is
this alteration indeed going to bring any modification?
After every
five years the dream merchants flock on the streets selling dreams in their
beautiful packet of promises…but when we unwrap the packet it is always empty
leaving us ripped off in the broad day light. But our hope never gets
diminished and we wait for another five years to use our constitutionally granted
power of franchise…it’s another point that this power always plunges in
vain.
When Freedom
struck its rays in the midnight everyone thought that they would now be get rid
of all the problems be it poverty, hunger, unemployment, everyone hoped that
now the Ram Rajya would soon be
established again…time went by…generations changed even the decade changed but
what remained unchanged was the status of issues of elections..Roti, Kapda aur
Makaan. At one point we see the high rise buildings and at another point we also see the slums getting
wider and broader. On one hand we boost of metro and bullet trains and on the
other hand even an electric bulb is still a dream for some. In other words, the
diversity is only getting wider and wider and development still remains a
distant dream for a wide share of population. Even after more than 60 years of independence
we are still in the group of third world nations. We are given right to life by
our constitution but right to live like human being is still a luxury for many.
People still die of hunger, people still die in want of medical facilities, people
still sleep on footpaths, people still defecate in open, right to education
mocks when we see little kids begging and loitering on the roads, still working
as a lobour despite terming child labour as illegal. But this 2014 LS election has
witnessed a massive participation of people . People have exercised their
franchise leaving behind all the local and regional issues having only issue in
mind…development, change and along with that a dramatic change in their own very life…but with
the change in government , these issues of basic human needs and amenities will ever be addressed and head towards its solution or
continue to remain topic of next general election…only time will tell…just wait
and watch…
